Our day in Vienna, Austria was on a Thursday. During our previous visit, we bought Eddie some stylish button-up shirts from a store named Armas, and we were excited to revisit it to make more purchases. Unfortunately, it coincided with a national holiday called Assumption Day, resulting in all stores being closed except for souvenir shops. However, the landmarks were still open for us to explore.
We began our tour at the Hofburg Palace, the main palace in Austria. Our tour guides shared numerous historical facts, overwhelming my brain with information about the Habsburg Dynasty, a vast ruling empire. One intriguing detail was Austria's commitment to neutrality under the 1955 Austrian State Treaty and its constitution, which prohibits military alliances and foreign military bases on Austrian soil.
After the official Palace tour, we had some free time to wander the city, though most stores were closed. We took photos of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, enjoyed some ice cream, briefly explored souvenir stores, and then returned to the ship.
Following lunch on the ship, we visited Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburgs' summer residence. I was fascinated to learn that tickets for the palace are typically sold out a year in advance. Our group had a tight schedule to get from ticket collection to the entry gate, with no time for bathroom breaks or bag checks. Despite the scorching weather, we briefly explored the palace's beautiful garden.
In the evening, we dined with the KVI team at Figlmüller, one of Vienna's most renowned restaurants. Known for its generous portions of schnitzel, I opted for spinach dumplings, which, though healthier, were richly coated in butter and Parmesan cheese. It was a delightful meal, and afterward, we Ubered back to the ship to continue our journey to Bratislava, Slovakia.
